About

Franziska Born (*1973) lives and works in Zurich, Switzerland.
Originally trained as a textile designer at the Zurich School of Art and Design she works in a wide variety of contexts: She designs costumes for the stage, textile products for bodies and spaces, colour concepts and non-textile designs for applications in architecture. From 1999 until 2005 she has been a member of PING PONG, a collective founded together with fashion designer Andrea Roca and graphic designers Marco Walser and Valentin Hindermann from Elektrosmog.
In 2003 she won the Swiss Design Award. The same prize was awarded to the PING PONG collective in 2001. Her graduation project was honoured with the Diploma Project Award (Förderpreis) Zurich School of Art and Design in 1998.
Since 2005, Franziska Born teaches at the Lucerne School of Art and Design, in the Textile Design Departement, where she established the embroidery unit and has been a lecturer in Textile Design.

Throughout the wide spectrum of disciplines and media that she uses, Franziska Born pursues a particular interest in ‘appearance and reality’. She is also undertaking profound research into materials and the use of colour. She deliberately explores the spaces between sketchiness and highly mastered technique, between the hand-made and the machine-made, between tradition and innovation and between high and low culture.
In her work she often evokes a subtle shift of reality by translating objects and motifs using unusual techniques or materials. This playful allusion to the mundane not only works as a tongue-in-cheek gesture, but it also acts as a reference to historical contexts or as an investigation into the traditional techniques of textile design.
